Getting to Campbell River ...
can be as fun or efficient as you wish. If you wish to drive, well, most people come via BC Ferries through Nanaimo Departure Bay or Duke Point. However you could come through Schwartz Bay via Victoria at the south of the Island; from Powell River through Little River via Comox just a half hour south; or through Port Hardy at the north end of the Island coming from Prince Rupert.
Campbell River is an hour and a half north of Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. Highway 99 is a 4 lane, divided highway with some magnificent scenery. Of course if that's a little too fast, there is always the "Old Highway", 99A, taking the scenic ocean route. Passing through towns and smaller villages, making it easier to stop and see this beautiful island.
Flying to Campbell River is also an option. Pacific Coastal Airlines and Central Mountain Air both fly from Vancouver. Westjet Airlines flys from Calgary and Edmonton into Comox Airport, about 45 minutes south.
Perhaps you are a train person. Via Rail operates a nice rail car system between Victoria and our neighbouring city, Courtenay. Pass along the old Esquimalt / Nanaimo Railway line, relaxing to the sound of the rails.
